The Star Wars sequel trilogy was a divisive return to a galaxy far, far away. While with the success of so much promise it kept The Force Awakenssubsequent films became the target of hate and ridicule from fans and critics, to the point that all hopes for the franchise seemed dashed (at least until The Mandalorian came by).
The sad truth is that this trilogy would never live up to everyone’s expectations, especially with the astronomically high pedestal they all placed the franchise on. Still, Disney could have done certain things differently that would have made it a more worthy sequel to the original Star Wars films.

7. More distance between films
While each film in the first two Star Wars trilogies was released three years apart, Disney released its sequels two years apart. And since Disney had released Villain One and solo Between main episodes, the hype died down knowing another Star Wars movie was just around the corner.
Making audiences wait longer for each film Episode VII would have made them even more excited to see them and possibly got more people to see them in theaters. It could also have given the filmmakers more time to take audience feedback and make necessary changes to their story plans. At this point in the story, the filmmakers should have focused on the characters introduced in previous films, such as Finn, Rose, and Poe.
This would have prevented them from being sidelined Episode IX and giving the writers room to give these characters the endings they deserve.
5. Keep Palpatine dead
While audiences were hyped to see Palpatine’s return The Rise of Skywalker, its resurrection ended up being a rushed job that ruined the film for many as soon as it began. There was little explanation for how Palpatine survived his death Return of the Jediwith only vague references to cloning and secret Sith powers spoken about in the film.
Episode IX could have benefited from a more detailed explanation, but it would have been better if Palpatine hadn’t returned at all. Even though Kylo Ren was the new Darth Vader, The Last Jedi ended up overthrowing Snoke and becoming the supreme leader of the First Order. This all seemed to result in him becoming the overall villain of the entire trilogy, staging a unique and exciting climax The Rise of Skywalker. But when Palpatine became his new master, the story undid something his character was built on and diverted attention away from him as a villain.
Therefore, it would have been more effective to portray Kylo Ren as the galaxy’s supreme oppressive power and explore how he would lead the First Order against the Resistance in Episode IX. It would also have drawn more attention to his relationship with Rey as they would have served as the ultimate symbols of good and evil in the galaxy.
3. Rey’s Parents Remain “Nobody”
The Last Jedi took a bold step by revealing that Rey’s parents weren’t as special as she’d hoped and they probably should have stayed that way. Rey’s character shouldn’t have been defined by who her parents were, and the fact that she became Palpatine’s granddaughter seemed like a forced repetition of Vader’s “I am your father” phrase.
If the filmmakers wanted to support The Last Jedi message about how everyone can be special, no matter where they come from, they could have taken a more unique path by letting Rey come from normal people.
2. Have a more unique vision
While the first six Star Wars episodes were George Lucas’ plan for the franchise, the sequels felt more like a clash of opposing ideas. Three different directors were originally hired to direct a film in the new trilogy: JJ Abrams, Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow. While the original trilogy had multiple directors, its story was written and written by Lucas Episodes VII to IX had plots developed by their respective directors.
But after Trevorrow resigned as director Episode IXJJ Abrams took over and changed much of what was set up by both Trevorrow and Johnson, apparently to win over fans after the backlash The Last Jedi. If the directors had planned a little more and settled on a story, the sequel to the trilogy could have looked more consistent and less like it was written straight off the cuff.

The latter film reworked several elements from the original trilogy to please fans enough that people thought the film was unoriginal and played it too safe.
When The Last Jedi went the other way, contrary to people’s expectations, The Rise of Skywalker just seemed to double down on fan service to win back disgruntled audiences. This all took the form of Palpatine’s resurrection, Rey was his granddaughter, she kissed Kylo Ren, and Chewbacca was suddenly given this medal. Disney should have relied less on promoting fan service and nostalgia with this trilogy, which got in the way of a reasonable and consistent narrative. Although Hollywood has always been about giving audiences what they want, sometimes that means giving them what they thought they didn’t want.
