There are certain things that you can’t really demonstrate like other parts of consumer electronics. A WiFi connected urine analyzer that sits in your toilet and tests your urine for analysis is one such device. That’s why I had to go to a behind-closed-doors event in a private suite here at CES in Las Vegas to test this prototype version of the Withings U-Scan.
U-Scan is Withing’s first attempt at a body fluid analysis device, albeit one with the heft of such a respected brand in the health tech space. The shell-shaped hardware sits on the rim of your bowl like a scent block, catching a small sample of liquid as you urinate. After about a minute, depending on the cartridge used, the user receives conclusions about his menstrual cycle or nutrition on his cell phone.
Regardless of the biology, you have to sit on the toilet to use this thing, and it’s a little surprising when the hardware lights up when it starts to work. You’ll surely know it too, as it makes a pretty noticeable whirring noise while your sample is being processed. At this early stage, I was able to get information about two statistics: the pH of my urine and its specific gravity.
Now I could give away my stats, but I’d rather not spoil the video where you learn a bit more about how it all works.
