Sonic the Hedgehog 2 won’t premiere in theaters until April 8, but Sega and Paramount Pictures have confirmed that a third film, along with a TV spin-off series, is in the works for Paramount+.
In a press release, the companies announced that development on Sonic 3 (or whatever it ends up being called) has already begun. There’s no word on who will be involved, but one would imagine the main cast will remain, along with director Jeff Fowler. Sega and Paramount did not share a release window.
The live-action TV series features Knuckles directed by Idris Elba, who made his debut in Sonic the Hedgehog 2and will premiere in 2023. It’s unclear if Knuckles is the star of this show or just the first character confirmed for it, but the former sounds more likely. This will add another video game series to the Paramount+ lineup alongside its upcoming premiere gloriole. To avoid possible confusion, this Sonic TV show is a separate project from Sonic Primethe animated series that launches on Netflix sometime this year.
“We have a remarkable partnership with Paramount and we look forward to continuing to grow the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with them,” said Sega CEO Haruki Satomi in the press release. “2022 is shaping up to be a significant year for the franchise with the second film releasing this April and Sonic Frontiers, the highly anticipated video game title releasing this holiday.”
2022 is indeed a big year for Sonic. As already mentioned, his first open-world game, Sonic Frontiers, is slated for release later this year. You can read about how the game was originally supposed to be released in 2021 here.
