According to Amazon, two cashless Go stores in New York City, two in Seattle and four in San Francisco will close on April 1st GeekWire. The e-retail giant made the announcement on the same day that it admitted it was pausing construction of its second headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, as it reevaluates its office supplies as more and more people prefer working remotely to work. As Bloomberg notes that these are just Amazon’s latest cost-cutting moves amid slowing sales growth. In January, the company expanded its planned job cuts from 10,000 to 18,000 jobs, with layoffs since then mainly involving staff from the retail and recruiting departments.
Company spokeswoman Jessica Martin told publications in a statement: “Like any physical retailer, we regularly evaluate our portfolio of stores and make optimization decisions as we go. We remain committed to the Amazon Go format and operate more than 20 Amazon Go stores nationwide and will continue to learn which locations and features resonate best with customers.”
The internet retail giant’s Go stores were designed as high-tech stores equipped with cameras and sensors that can detect when products are taken and replaced on the shelves. Customers can grab any item they want, which is placed in their virtual shopping cart for online payment, and then exit the store without having to go through a checkout.
