AMD’s next-gen laptop graphics cards with RDNA 3 could indeed be very fast according to the latest rumors – and Nvidia’s Lovelace mobile GPUs have also been spotted in a new leak and are said to be just as fast or as fast.
All of this comes from two Twitter regulars: First, Greymon55 delivered a simple tweet (spotted by Wccftech (opens in new tab)) consisting of a laptop icon stating that it is roughly equivalent to the RX 6950 XT, meaning that the top-of-the-line GPU on the RX 7000 notebook will have performance levels similar to this beefy desktop graphics card from AMD.

Kopite7kimi then chimed in on another thread on Twitter – a post that revealed Nvidia’s rumored next-gen laptop GPU lineup (we’ll get back to that) – and said that the RX 7900M, which is obviously what the leaker believes will be The top dog RDNA 3 Mobile GPU (apparently based on the Navi 32 chip) offers performance in the range of the RTX 3090 desktop card.
😮💨Fight with RX 7900M, it has performance like RTX 3090.October 22, 2022
Apply your own spice liberally here of course, but in other words these leaks are both saying the same thing as the RX 6950 XT sits in the same tier of performance as the RTX 3090. (In a lot of games anyway – they trade punches here and there, but the big picture is one of them being very similar overall, at least as far as rasterization goes, meaning ray-traced graphics aren’t accounted for).
Analysis: Really Impressive Stuff – And Does It Also Apply To Nvidia’s Next-Gen?
If that’s true – and that’s quite a giant if, because that’s a grand ol’ claim – the RDNA 3 laptop flagship could be something very special. Offering RTX 3090 / RX 6950 XT performance in a gaming notebook early next year would be a huge leap for those who enjoy gaming on the go; indeed we cannot underestimate how much of a step on such a boost would be. To put things in perspective, remember that AMD’s current mobile flagship offers the performance levels of an RX 6700 XT.
The other interesting element here is the Nvidia leak – hold your skeptical hat on very tight again – showing that Team Green is said to have an RTX 4090 laptop GPU on the market. That’s notable as we haven’t seen an RTX 3090 for mobile (just a 3080 Ti), but this flagship GPU won’t be using the desktop version’s AD102 graphics chip – that would just be too hot to handle – it’s bumped except for an AD103. But of course that will still offer a big boost in performance over the existing flagship 3080 Ti laptop graphics card.
Trying to guess where the performance might end up compared to the rumored RX 7900M is obviously a pretty big question at this point, but it’s certainly possible that a mobile RTX 4090 GPU (based on AD103, as mentioned) could do the It could reach RTX 3090 performance levels or close. That said, the battle between AMD’s and Nvidia’s next-gen flagship laptops is likely to be very close, and whichever way you go about it, gamers will get excellent performance from these respective GPUs of Team Green and Team Red.
So, keep your fingers crossed that these two speculative lines work out – but at this point, they’re certainly promising signs for the near future of gaming laptops.
