The majority of iPhone 14 rumors so far suggest that Apple won’t produce an iPhone 14 mini and will instead release an iPhone 14 Max as the fourth flagship of 2022 – but a new leak is rowing against that tide.
Corresponding 91mobile (opens in new tab) and Evan Blass – two well-known sources of leaks with strong track records – one of Apple’s Asian partners plans to have seven new devices in stock next month. Those devices appear to include an iPhone 14, an iPhone 14 Pro, an iPhone 14 Pro Max, and… an iPhone 14 mini.
As if that wasn’t enough to raise a few eyebrows, the entry-level 10.2-inch 10th-gen iPad and two new iPad Pros (an 11-inch model and a 12.9-inch -model) rounded.
Most other tipsters are predicting we won’t be seeing any new iPads until October, but this leak puts them at the iPhone 14 reveal.
The truth is out there
When you add all of this together, it looks like this partner info might be bogus — but it’s worth reporting just for the track record of the sources involved. For example, Blass has leaked information about the Google Pixel Watch and many other devices in advance.
That these details have surfaced at all shows how difficult it is to create devices in secret. While companies like Apple, Samsung and Google might be able to keep tabs on their own employees, a slew of third parties – from international retailers to phone case makers – need to be informed ahead of time about what’s in store.
With that in mind, we present you with this rumor: it would be a big surprise, but maybe there is a successor to the iPhone 13 mini after all. And maybe Apple wants to save time by unveiling its new iPhones and iPads all at once – although that seems very unlikely at this point.
Analysis: Dissecting the rumours
As we have already said, it is difficult to launch new smartphones or tablets without some leaks or rumors appearing in advance. As with the UK and European football transfer window, most announcements these days are talked about well before they actually happen.
Not only are companies struggling to keep their plans in check, they also know there is a lot of interest in these upcoming devices.
This, in turn, drives publications and social media users to spread as much speculative information as possible – which again is similar when it comes to player substitutions on the football team.
We wouldn’t say that’s the case with this particular rumor: the sources involved here are usually reliable and don’t publish click-only predictions. As noted in the 91mobiles article, the details of the iPhone 14 mini and iPads come from one of the largest Apple distributors in Asia.
That said, it’s important to put any leak or rumor in context, and considering we’ve seen so many sources mention two full-size iPhones and two larger iPhones that make up the iPhone 14 range, we’ll go with them take new information with a pinch of salt, and may be wondering if this is “emergency preparedness work” rather than nailed-down launch items.
However, you never know…
- It might be a while before we see a foldable iPhone
