If you thought there wasn’t enough advertising in your life, iPhone users may see them in the Maps app in 2023 Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in a recent edition of his Power On subscriber-only newsletter.
MacRumors reports that Gurman stated, “I believe the technical work is already underway to launch search ads in the Apple Maps app, and we should start implementing them sometime over the next year.” The ads would reportedly appear in the form of recommended results. For example, searching for “burger” in the Maps app could show ads for nearby fast food places paid for by the franchise. This type of advertising is already featured in other map apps like Waze, Google Maps, and Yelp!
This isn’t the first time Gurman has predicted ads will appear for the Maps app. Earlier this month, he wrote that Apple’s VP of Advertising Todd Teresi is aiming to triple the company’s advertising revenue. The company has already started showing ads on the iOS App Store, allowing developers to showcase their programs at the top of search results. According to Gurman, the company has already started internal testing to integrate this advertising model into Maps.
With ads already in the App Store and possibly now in Maps, Apple may be signaling an end to the flawless Walled Garden experience of iOS. If that prediction comes true, you might start seeing ads on other popular Apple apps like books, podcasts and Apple TV, Gurman speculates.
