Apple paid a total of $ 60 billion to app store developers in 2021, data from the tech giant revealed this week.
The company said it has paid $ 260 billion to app store developers worldwide since the App Store launched in 2008, up from $ 200 billion the previous year.
Apple said the number set a new annual record for app store developer revenue while also finding that it represents “only a small fraction” of all the commerce the app store enables.
According to company data, App Store customers “spent more between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve than ever before, achieving double-digit growth over the previous year”.
About the latest numbers, says Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services, said: “With over 745 million paid subscriptions, Apple continues to connect developers, artists and storytellers with users on more than a billion devices, delivering powerful tools, content and experiences that enrich their lives in profound ways every day.”
But the app store’s successful year was not without controversy, with Apple faces increasing control on its business practices and also deals with legal proceedings related to the operation of its online marketplace.
For example, the battle rages on with Epic Games, with Epic appealing in September a ruling by a judge that failed to resolve the matter for the video game company.
The case exploded in August 2020 when Epic accused Apple (and also Google with its Play Store) of anticompetitive and monopoly practices with their respective app stores. As a result, Epic attempted to bypass the in-app purchase process where Apple receives a 30% commission on every sale, with Epic’s measures allowing players to shop directly from the developer at discounted prices.
