Last week it was reported that iPhone 13 owners with an Apple Watch ran into a bug where they couldn’t use their smartwatch to unlock their iPhone. Apple has since confirmed that they are aware of the problem and that they will fix it in an upcoming update, although they did not specify when that update would come.
According to Apple, “Apple has encountered an issue where Apple Watch unlocking may not work with iPhone 13 devices. You might see “Unable to communicate with Apple Watch” when you try to unlock your iPhone while wearing a face mask, or you might not be able to set up unlocking with your Apple Watch.
“This problem will be fixed in an upcoming software update. Until the update is available, you can deactivate unlocking with the Apple Watch and unlock your iPhone 13 with your passcode. “
For those unfamiliar with the function, this was introduced last year during the pandemic when people started wearing masks. As a result, security features like Face ID proved more annoying as users could no longer use them while wearing a mask, defeating the purpose of the feature.
By activating the unlocking with Apple Watch, however, as long as the user was wearing their Apple Watch on their wrist and had authenticated themselves, they could unlock their iPhones with Face ID even with the mask on. It’s a very handy feature, so hopefully it won’t take Apple too long to come up with a solution.
Note that this only affects the iPhone 13 and older compatible iPhones will have no problem with it.
