We’ve been following Awake ever since the company introduced good-looking watches made from recycled ocean plastic. However, it is new Mission to Earth Special edition (250 pieces) pushes the concept to the (luxury) limits and shows that it is possible to build a noble high-end watch with recycled materials.
For example, the case of the watch is made from 70% recycled titanium, a material that is fairly rare on the planet. I’ve used titanium watches before, and they feel different than stainless steel, both for their tactile feel against the skin and their light weight.
The watch is full of space milestone references. “Dare Mighty Things” is engraved on the inside of the Miyota’s oscillating weight, a nod to the landing parachute used by the Mars rover Perseverance. The strap is designed to resemble the texture of astronaut suits. Looking at the watch, the dial layout is reminiscent of the The dome Observation window of the International Space Station (ISS).
At night, the non-radioactive and non-toxic afterglow Super-LumiNova ensures that you can read the time clearly even in total darkness. This choice sure sounds better than radioactive radium or tritium alternatives.
The sapphire crystal features embedded ID GLASS NFC technology paired with blockchain to uniquely identify each watch.
The icing on the cake is that each box comes with “an authentic certified meteorite fragment of the asteroid.” VESTA‘, a billion-year-old meteorite that impacted Tataouine, Tunisia (the city that inspired it Tatooine in Star Wars, that was partly filmed in Tunisia)
