These days, Blizzard is a company that doesn’t often venture into brand new universes. over watch and Hearthstone come to mind as slightly newer new IPs for the company, but even Hearthstone is set in Warcraft Universe. Today Blizzard announced that it is taking this rare step into a new universe through a survival game, in a first for the company.
Blizzard has dabbled in real-time strategy, action RPG, MMO, MOBA, FPS, and even racing games in the past, but up to this point we’ve never seen the company create a survival game. Unfortunately, at the moment there are almost no details about this survival game, since Blizzard’s only mention of which comes from a tweet recruiting developers and designers for the title.
In fact, Blizzard even refers to the project as an “unannounced survival game” in this tweet, which seems odd after the company acknowledged its existence. However, the tweet confirms that the game is set in an “all new universe,” so it’s as cool as a Diablo or Warcraft-themed survival game, looks like we won’t get it with this new title.
The tweet also includes what we believe to be concept art for the game, depicting an armored hunter or ranger wielding an ax and kneeling in front of what looks suspiciously like a portal. It certainly has that “Blizzard Fantasy” feel to it, but without additional details from the studio, there’s not much we can learn from it.
Considering that Blizzard is revealing this game as part of an application call, we’re probably a long way from release as well. Blizzard is a company that has historically taken its time developing games, so it could very well be years before this survival title is released.
Blizzard has been in the news a lot lately, mostly because of a sexual harassment and abuse scandal that has gripped the company and resulted in the departure of several high-profile individuals. With this scandal still unfolding, Microsoft recently announced its intention to buy Activision Blizzard for nearly $70 billion.
That deal isn’t expected to close until sometime in Microsoft’s fiscal year 2023, which begins in July 2022. We’ll let you know when more is announced about both this game and the potential Microsoft acquisition, but we might be waiting on both fronts for a while.
