Best for very large rooms
Coway Air Mega 400Rated to clean up to 1,560 square feet, the Airmega 400 will circulate all of the air in that space twice an hour. But in a room half that size, its HEPA filters circulate the air four times an hour. From the touch controls to the air quality monitor’s color-coded light ring, it’s intuitive to use. Changing the filter is easy. Two sturdy covers are held magnetically and release easily, and the two filters snap in and out with no fuss. I tested the 400S, which includes Wi-Fi that lets you control it via a smartphone app. But if you don’t need to control your air purifier remotely, the more affordable 400 version is the right choice. —Matt Jancer

A whisper-quiet air slide
Blueair Pure fan carThe Pure Fan Auto looks more like a small work of art than an air purifier. We like other Blueair products, and this one adds cool air to its cleaning abilities – it circulates the air five times an hour in a 326-square-foot room. The fan isn’t powerful enough to cool down a muggy room on its own, but it feels quite nice when sitting in front of it. It barely makes any noise, but if you’re a light sleeper, night mode turns the fan down to its lowest setting and turns off the air quality indicator. The standard Pure Fan costs the same as the Auto, but the latter offers Auto mode, Night mode and an air quality gauge. – Medea Giordano

An attractive option (for small spaces)
Coway Air Mega 150In case you haven’t noticed, we like Coway. The Airmega 150 is ultra-quiet and the color-coded air monitoring light and touch controls are intuitive. There’s also a light that indicates when it’s time to change the deodorant or HEPA filter. The third pre-filter is washable.
It is suitable for small spaces up to 214 square feet. My apartment is bigger than that, but keeping it in the living room still allowed me to improve the air quality throughout the room. It’s pricey for its size (our top pick from Coway is a better bang for your buck), but if you want something then go for it looks pretty, do that. It comes in pink (!!) and a beautiful sage green. —Medea Giordano
