Savathun’s presence in Destiny 2 was first felt during the Arrival Season when she attempted to disrupt the Guardians’ interaction with the Black Fleet. Guardians would unwittingly walk by their side for months, however. On the PlayStation blog, Bungie Editor-in-Chief Brian Ekberg spoke about the narrative team who developed Savathun’s story and seeds she’d sown over the past few months to dismantle the Vanguard. Interestingly, the information from the blog post reflects what Savathun said about her deceptions, which she tried to mask as friendly gestures, in the cutscene after her reveal in Season of the Lost. After all, Bungie’s storytelling team is the mastermind behind Savathun’s deception.
The players first saw Savathun in the season of the hunt as Osiris, but the blog makes it clear that early in the season, players heard Savathun as Osiris in Zavala’s office. Ekberg says: “The line in which Osiris declared that his ghost, Sagira, died in an attack – that was not Osiris at all, but Savathun, who took the place of the warlock for the first time and lured players to the moon.” Knowing it was Savathun instead, the mystery behind Sagira’s death and the location of her clam become more suspect. In Savathun’s cutscene, she also mentions that she brought the Crow to town to be redeemed, but Ekberg explained that Savathun planned the entire interaction where players first meet Crow when he kills the Swarm Knight to give Osiris save.
During the Season of the Chosen, Cabal Empress Caiatl met with Zavala to form an alliance to defeat Xivu Arath and Savathun, but Osiris expressed doubts about Caiatl in the opening sequence. Julia Nardin, senior narrative lead at Bungie, said Savathun could not cement the alliance between Caiatl and the final city. “But she did so in a way that prevented Caiatl from launching a full blown attack on her hiding place, and when the time came to de-escalate the conflict she had helped create, she made sure that her solution was all Players kept running their chessboard, ”she said. In Savathun’s cutscene, Savathun says that she saved Zavala from Caiatl’s motives and prevented a war between them, aside from the fact that she was able to prevent an alliance.
In Season of the Splicer, distrust of the last city was evident. When the city grew nervous of the Vex presence on Endless Night, things went according to Savathun’s plans. Lakshmi told Ikora that Osiris was part of the attack on the Eliksni, and the epilogue cutscene showed Osiris watching the fight against the Vex without helping. The blog post mentions how Savathun tried to turn the Elkisni, Lakshmi, Saladin, and Saint-14 into a weapon to create a rift between them and Zavala and Ikora. However, Savathun phrased this differently, saying that they brought the Eliksni to their knees at Ikora and drove enemies from the Last City.
The blog also explained how the Bungie storytelling team added a dialogue in Season of the Hunt in which Osiris says that Xivu Arath “has no ambition,” expressing Savathun’s internal frustration. Nardin talked about how Savathun was a mess when the season of the splicer came around because the deception wasn’t enough to feed her worm.
Then, at the beginning of the Season of the Lost, we learn that Osiris was Savathun all along. While the reveal was dramatic, we didn’t see Savathun’s actual form like in the trailer for The Witch Queen. Nardin stated on the blog and on Twitter that it was because they didn’t have a character model for Savathun while working on the season. Still, they made a powerful reveal by making Osiris sound more like Savathun just before the reveal.
Fun fact: We were still working on the character model for Savathûn when building Season of the Lost, which is why you don’t see her in the big transformation reveal. 50% of game developers are looking for possible solutions to creative problems; the other half implements it. https://t.co/oEh2odUMek

Now the secret lies in what Savathun’s next step will be and where the real Osiris is. Ekberg says in the blog post that the goal was to create a strong narrative without killing characters and illusory place Savathun among her enemies. It is unclear whether Osiris is trapped somewhere or dead, but this statement makes it appear as if Osiris is alive.
Since Savathun’s plans are mysterious, we have some theories about worm gods and the traveler’s light. Also, check out Destiny 2 The Witch Queen: Everything We Know for more information about the upcoming expansion.
The Witch Queen is scheduled for February 22, 2022.
