Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II had a massive debut, grossing more than $800 million in sell-through worldwide after the first three days of release on October 28th.
This makes Modern Warfare II the “best-selling opening weekend of all time” for the Call of Duty franchise, eclipsing the previous record holder, 2011’s Modern Warfare 3, which set the three-day record cited in Activision’s announcement today.
Modern Warfare II’s $800 million in three days is a huge number, but it’s not a video game record. Back in 2013, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V grossed $1 billion in its first three days. For comparison, Bethesda’s Fallout 4 shipped 12 million copies and grossed $750 million in its first 24 hours alone.
Activision said in a press release that Modern Warfare II’s $800 million in earnings surpassed the biggest theatrical releases of the year in the movie world and even surpassed the box office numbers for Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in its opening weekend combined.
However, this isn’t a perfect, fair, or complete comparison, as the movie and video game businesses are very different, with all sorts of differences in how they report sales and profitability. In any case, Modern Warfare II clearly had a meaningful, record-breaking start for Activision.
“Thank you to our talented team for creating magic through exceptional artistry and technology, and to the global community of players finding joy and connection through Call of Duty. This milestone is theirs,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard.
Activision also said Modern Warfare II set new “player participation franchise records” for unique players and game hours during the first three days of the game’s “premium release.” This is probably related to how the Modern Warfare II campaign launched for pre-orders early on October 20th.
“Thank you Call of Duty players for making the launch of Modern Warfare II one of the record books and the highest-grossing entertainment openings of the year. It is our honor and privilege to deliver such a historic launch weekend for the best fans in the world,” said Call of Duty GM Johanna Faries. “As amazing as this opening was, Call of Duty has a lot more in store “An unprecedented level of support for the Modern Warfare universe is on the horizon and the launch of Warzone 2.0 is imminent. It’s an incredible time for the franchise.”
