It seems Canon plans to end 2022 with a bang. The company recently launched the EOS R6 Mark II mirrorless camera, which will be the successor to the popular EOS R6.
Compared to the outgoing R6, the R6 Mk II has significantly improved photography-centric features and some improvements in the videography sections as well. We take a look at the specs, some features, pricing and availability of the EOS R6 Mark II.
Canon EOS R6 Mark II: features and specifications
The Canon EOS R6 Mk II features a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, which is an improvement over the EOS R6’s 20-megapixel resolution. The ISO range remains the same, which is still 100 to 1,02,400 for stills and 100 to 25,600 for videos.
Canon has managed to improve the EOS R6 Mk II’s burst shooting ability from 20fps to 40fps with AE/AF tracking when using the electronic shutter and 12fps when using the mechanical shutter. It features 5-axis in-body sensor stabilization.
The autofocus system is said to have been improved and can now recognize more subjects such as horses, trains and airplanes thanks to the AI deep learning technology in the camera. The EOS R6 Mk II also features a digital teleconverter that can increase the focal length by 2x or 4x.
For video, the EOS R6 Mk II can now record 4K video at 60 fps (oversampled 6K footage using the full sensor width) for extended periods and unlimited 4K video recording at 30 fps. For slow-motion videos, we see an increase from 120 to 180 fps at 1080p. We also get support for Canon Log 3 and HDR PQ video. The EOS R6 Mk II records 6K RAW externally to an external recorder via HDMI, with full HD proxy data simultaneously recorded to either of the two SD card slots for easy editing
In addition to the existing zebra display, the EOS R6 Mk II is equipped with the false color function, widely used in the Cinema EOS system, which makes it easier to adjust exposure even in difficult conditions.
Canon introduces two new features with the EOS R6 Mk II. This includes pre-recording for movies, a core feature of Cinema EOS cameras, which allows users to capture moments that occur up to 5 seconds before the record button is pressed, reducing the need for “recording on standby”.
We also get a Hybrid Auto mode, which captures video 2-4 seconds before the shutter is released during still capture and automatically compiles it into a digest movie for the day, providing readily available video content for a variety of purposes.
Supporting UVC (USB Video Class) and UAC (USB Audio Class) protocols, the EOS R6 MARK II enables real-time Full HD 30p video and audio transmission to a Windows/Mac OS computer for real-time live streams, Remote meetings and computer-based video recording. Live streamers and content creators can now take full advantage of a full-frame camera and high-quality lenses through plug-and-play on both Windows and Mac OS.
In terms of design, the Canon EOS R6 Mk II has a familiar looking design and button layout like the older model. We also get an OLED electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 3.69 million pixels.
