In 2012, Valve’s Gabe Newell mentioned an abandoned game called Stars of Blood, just said, “We had an in-house project called Stars of Blood, which was a space pirate game that never saw the light of day.” Concept art by a few ex-Valve artists had previously been leaked, and more was found out later – some from photos taken during tours of the studio. The fans at Valve archive put together a repository of Stars of blood artwhere it has been since then.
On the weekend it is Obscure Game Aesthetics Twitter account, which publishes screenshots and graphics from old or forgotten video games, published four concepts for Stars of Blood environments. It followed with a Tech demo of swarm AI by one of the ex-Valve employees who worked on Stars of Blood and theorized that this could also have come from the canceled game. It has since been posted on r / LeaksAndRumors, r / GamingLeaksAndRumours, r / pcgaming, r / games, r / GamePreservationists, and r / UnreleasedGames, as well as making the rounds on various websites, forums, and social media.
The character designs are a bit of a Moebius (there is even one called mumbiusSM.jpg), and it was rumored that Stars of Blood would include the Combine and be part of the Half-Life universe. Not much more was known about it, but Valve space pirate game is all you really need to be intrigued. Now it’s just one more game that will never be, alongside the various Half-Life projects that were canceled before Alyx, Arkanes spin-off Ravenholm, Prospero and all the others.
