I’m a big fan of breakout style games. You know, ones where you hit a little ball with a paddle and it breaks the blocks? I like these. you are good One of the first games I remember playing was Super Break Out on the Game Boy.
That’s where developer Connor Aitken comes in, a fairly recent game design graduate who had an oddly clever idea and created a prototype for us all to enjoy: KBRD. (opens in new tab) The basic idea is that you have a small ball of pixels, but instead of a paddle, you make a paddle by using any combination of two keys on your keyboard. So you can stretch between Q and P for a big, wide paddle jump, or redirect to a block wide with something like P and Z or W and C for a perfect angle. New blocks will appear over time, as will little yellow bonus balls.

While KBRD is still a prototype, it is free to play. It’s by no means a complete game, just a prototype really, but the appeal of the concept is clear. Any game that relies on the unique capabilities of its input device will be interesting, at least to me. Twitter is already full of ideas on how to improve the concept, evolve it and give it unique twists: a cooldown for using letters quickly, forcing you to use each letter before using one again, and the like. Cooldowns, special items – you know what matters.
