After being inactive for nearly a year, the DCEU has stormed back into pop culture consciousness. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. took advantage of its prime Hall H property to introduce the cast and directors of two of the most anticipated films of 2022.
The first is above Shazam! wrath of the gods. A sequel to the 2019 hit, Shazam 2 brings back Zachary Levi as the ever-popular teenage superhero whose name isn’t Miles Morales or Mrs. MarveI’m Kamala Khan, Billy Batson. He is joined by his foster brothers and sisters who, if you recall, transformed into their own versions of Shazam by the end of this film.
This time they fight against the daughters of Atlas, played by respected actors and Fast & Furious Badass Helen Mirren and former Charlie’s Angel Lucy Liu. Aside from the usual lightning strikes and scenes of mass destruction, there also seems to be a giant dragon in the mix, which is always welcome in a fantasy blockbuster. wrath of the gods hits theaters on December 21, 2022.
Longtime Shazam nemesis Black Adam is also getting his own movie, pitting Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson against the eponymous superhero. Or is it a super villain? We’re still not sure, as Warner Bros.’ marketing department goes out of their way to portray the comic book character as some sort of mystery. Is he good? devilish? Somewhere inbetween? Con attendees got a one-minute glimpse that was (of course) shared with everyone else in the world as well.
In addition to The Rock’s anti-hero, the film also stars the Justice Society of America, a 1940s superhero group formed by Hawkman, Atom Smasher, Cyclone and Dr. Fate is represented, played by former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan. Black Adam hits theaters on October 21, 2022.
