Rumors come true as the upcoming DJI Avata FPV (First-Person View) drone has surfaced on the FCC’s (Federal Communications Commission) website.
You can view the documents by going to FCC ID website (opens in new tab) where you can see that Avata got the grantee code from SS3 and you can read some documents related to the drone. The reason this sudden appearance is such a big deal is that it could hint at an upcoming release date. Original reports given a late start due to production relocation. But acc Drone News Site Drone DJ (opens in new tab)that can not be.
The FCC assigns recipient codes when a product is tested. It tests devices that communicate wirelessly to ensure they meet American communications standards. With Avata getting the thumbs up from the FCC, Drone DJ claims that’s an indication of a release date coming soon, although no one but DJI knows when that will be. We reached out to DJI and asked for Avata’s launch date and will update this story if they get back to us.
If you look through the FCC documents, you won’t find much technical information; not even an official picture of the drone. There is a recently leaked image, but that’s it. Most documents are either test results or letters to the agency. The only interesting tidbit comes from the bottom label (opens in new tab) showing that the Avata will have a 2,420mAh battery. The current Battery for DJI FPV drones is 2,000 mAh (opens in new tab) and delivers a maximum flight time of 20 minutes. With that in mind, this could indicate that Avata will have an increased flight time.
The other two devices
In addition to the Avata, the FCC filing also reveals two new devices: the DJI goggles 2 (opens in new tab) and the O3 air unit (opens in new tab). Details about these devices are also rare. The Goggles 2 appears to be a successor to the DJI FPV Goggles V2 headset and there will be two models, according to the official label (opens in new tab): Model RCDS18 and RCDS18B. What is strange, however, is that there is no apparent difference between the two headsets.
According to that Confirmation Letter for Model Differences (opens in new tab), the models are “identical in terms of circuit design, PCB layout, electrical component users, and internal wiring, except for the differences noted below.” However, no differences are listed. Before this leak, rumors were circulating about new FPV goggles and these rumors also said that the device will be launched with Avata. This could mean that one model is packaged with the drone and the other is a standalone unit. But without more concrete information, it’s just a guess.
Less was revealed about the O3 Air Unit. The FCC filings only show the results of wireless communications tests to ensure the device complies with American regulations, so it could be a drone like Avata. That Label gives no indication (opens in new tab), not even what battery it has. References to the O3 Air Unit go as back as May 2022 (opens in new tab).
Ultimately, we’ll just have to wait for DJI to release more information on the O3 Air Unit. However, we can take comfort in the confirmation of the Avata drone and the potential of the release date coming soon.
