While Skyrim will have plenty of NPCs following you, carrying your burdens, and even agreeing to marry you even though you probably reek of dead mammoth, there’s definitely a limit to how much personality they have. Guardian of the Coast (opens in new tab) is a newly released mod for Skyrim Special Edition that adds a new “Bioware-style” questline, locations, and nine companions.
Each of these companions has their own quest for loyalty, and thanks to 27 hard-working voice actors, Warden of the Coast includes more than 9,000 lines of recorded dialogue. Three of your companions can accompany you at any time, Dragon Age-style, letting you choose their perks, abilities, and attribute increases as they level up. And yes, some of them can be romantic.
The Warden of the Coast story sends you to an island where the Gates of Oblivion have opened. They must fight Dremora and prevent the Daedric Lord behind all of this from carrying out their plans. The main quest is to choose between factions, and you can consult your companions to see how they feel about each option. It features a “dynamic companion viewing system modified by dialogue, player kills, and quest decisions.”
Modder TheBawb says it should take 10 to 15 hours to make it to any of Warden of the Coast’s five main endings. The mod’s story begins after you complete The Way of the Voice quest, although there is an option to start earlier if you want to start a new save directly. However, you should be aware that it is balanced for characters level five and up.
A planned update will allow any of the Warden of the Coast companions you fall in love with to become a potential spouse after completing the mod’s quest line.
