Tesla CEO Elon Musk has urged his employees to return to the office or leave the company, according to a memo sent to employees this week.
Some Tesla office workers have been working from home during the pandemic, but Musk now wants them to leave home and resume commuting.
Though the leaked memo includes Musk’s name, he has yet to confirm that he actually sent the message. However, Musk later responded a tweet about itwho said that Tesla’s remote workers “should pretend they work somewhere else.”

The memo was sent to executives. however, appears to be a set of instructions that all Tesla office workers must follow.
“Remote work is no longer acceptable [sic]’ the memo begins.
“Anyone who wants to work remotely has to be in the office at least (and I mean *at least*) 40 hours a week or leave Tesla.”
Musk writes that “that’s less than what we ask of factory workers,” adding that if there are “exceptional employees” who find office work “impossible,” he will review their case personally.
He continues: “Additionally, the ‘office’ must be a Tesla headquarters, not a remote branch unrelated to job responsibilities, such as responsibility for human relations at the Fremont factory, but your office must be located in another state.”
A later email seen by electrIt, also signed by “Elon,” has the subject line: “To be super clear.”
It states that “everyone” must work at least 40 hours a week in the office and that if someone does not show up at their usual place of work, “we will assume that you have resigned”.
Musk adds, “The older you are, the more visible your presence needs to be. That’s why I lived in the factory so much – so the people on the line could see me working alongside them. If I hadn’t done that, Tesla would have gone bankrupt long ago.”
The Tesla boss notes that there are indeed companies that still have their employees working remotely, adding: “But when was the last time you shipped a great new product? It’s been a while.”
The memo ends by stating that Tesla will “design and actually manufacture the most exciting and meaningful products of any company on Earth. This will not be done by calling.”
The pandemic has ushered in a new era of hybrid working for office workers, although obviously not everyone is happy about it.
Musk’s office-only approach is likely to worry people at Twitter, the company the billionaire entrepreneur plans to acquire.
In response to the new way of doing things, Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal said in March that the company is committed to “truly flexible working,” telling its employees, “You will work where you feel most productive and creative, and that includes working full-time from home forever.” .”
If Musk’s takeover bid goes through, that could change.
