If we’ve learned anything from Marvel’s comics and cinematic universe, it’s that the world is constantly expanding. New villains are constantly appearing and new heroes are constantly rushing in to stop them. Crystal Dynamics takes the same approach with its game Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Marvel’s Avengers launched with six playable characters, but that’s far from all the heroes we can control when all is said and done. Crystal Dynamics has said all playable characters will be added at no additional cost, but additional upgrades to these characters could cost money.
Check out all the characters you can play as in Marvel’s Avengers, as well as all the heroes yet to come.
After a disaster early in the game, Kamala Khan discovers new powers that allow her to grow and stretch her body to fend off enemies and traverse the environment in unique ways. As the main character of Marvel’s Avengers, her goal is to reassemble the outlaw team of heroes to save the world once more.
The Avengers’ leader, Captain America, is killed during the opening sequence. His loss is felt throughout the story as the Avengers work to come together and make sense of his victim.
The billionaire metal-suited tech genius has a full arsenal of gadgets and weapons to use against the forces of evil.
The former SHIELD super spy is a martial arts and weapons expert and has the gadgets to support her skills.
The mighty Thunder God wields his legendary hammer, Mjolnir, along with the mighty command of lightning.
The meek Bruce Banner transforms into the giant, green Rage Monster to rampage through enemies and environments with ease.
Hawkeye (Kate Bishop) – December 8, 2020
Clint Barton’s protégé joins as the first post-launch hero. A skilled archer trained by Clint, Kate has skills similar to his, but with her own moves and equipment, including razor darts, scattershot darts, explosive darts, and smoke darts. She can also teleport around the battlefield with warp arrows, spawn holograms, and apply quantum energy to her attacks. She joins as part of Operation: Taking AIM, with a story centered around finding Clint Barton with the Super Adaptoid standing in her way as a new Omega-level antagonist with all the abilities of the Avengers.
Hawkeye (Clint Barton) – March 18, 2021
Clint Barton, missing since the events of A-Day, resurfaces as part of Operation: Future Imperfect. Set in a future where the world has been devastated by the Kree and nuclear war, Operation: Future Imperfect pits Hawkeye against a deranged Maestro, a transformed version of Hulk that combines Banner’s intelligence with Hulk’s might. Maestro has killed all superheroes and supervillains in this theoretical future, and it’s up to Hawkeye to put an end to his reign.
Black Panther – August 17, 2021
Black Panther joined the Avengers to make the first post-launch content drop large enough to be considered an expansion. The War for Wakanda expansion follows King T’Challa and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as they battle invading mercenaries led by Klaw and Crossbones.
Spider-Man – November 30, 2021
After several teases, Crystal Dynamics eventually brought Spider-Man to the PlayStation versions of Marvel’s Avengers. Instead of delivering Spider-Man via an expansion like Black Panther or an Operation like Hawkeye and Kate Bishop, Spider-Man joins the superhero squad with no story missions or in-engine cutscenes.
Mighty Thor – June 28, 2022
Jane Foster joined the fight in Marvel’s Avengers just before her appearance Thor: Love & Thunder. Mighty Thor features many of the same abilities as Thor but with a few changes, including her intrinsic All-Mother’s Blessing and the new Overcharge move God Tempest.
The Winter Soldier – November 29, 2022
Bucky Barnes joins Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as part of Update 2.7, which includes a dramatic battle against MODOK. The Winter Soldier’s moveset is inspired by friends and training partners like Black Widow and Captain America, but he’s an attacking character through and through, with a strong emphasis on dealing damage in a variety of ways.
Of course, with so many overpowered heroes on the roster, Marvel’s Avengers needs a stable full of vicious threats worthy of the team’s attention. Just like with its hero roster, Marvel’s Avengers has steadily expanded its villain roster. Here are the characters to expect as you play through the base game and its various post-release content.
