The Five Nights at Freddy’s film has lost its director, but the project is still a work in progress. Chris Columbus, the famous director who made Harry Potter and Home Alone, has dropped out of the Blumhouse horror film, Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum confirmed Collider.
When asked whether a new director was hired, Blum replied: “This is secret information.” Columbus is at least the second director to leave the FNAF film as Gil Kenan (Monster House) previously worked for Warner Bros.
Series creator Scott Cawthon is said to have vetoed the script for Columbus’ version, which delayed the film. It was then suspected that Columbus stepped out of the film as a result, and now it’s official.
The FNAF movie has been in development for a very long time and part of the fight to get it off the ground is getting the script right.
“We wrote several scripts and we threaded a needle, which is what Five Nights at Freddy’s does and does justice to [FNAF creator Scott Cawthon] happy, “said Blum.
Blum said Cawthon had the equivalent of “Final Cut,” which was the special privilege of having the last word. “It took longer than I hope to get the real story,” said Blum.
Although making the FNAF film was a tedious process, Blum said he doesn’t plan on leaving anytime soon. “We are still a long way from giving up. And I am confident that I will eventually make it,” he said.
In 2020, Cawthon released his many story ideas for the FNAF film but remained silent about his latest script that he plans to incorporate into the film itself.
Cawthon was very protective of the FNAF film and took his time to make sure the film was done right. Finding the right script was a long and challenging process, but Cawthon said he wouldn’t compromise on the story.
“I’m determined to find the right story,” he said in 2018. “I’m sticking to what I’ve always said: either the right film will be made or no film will be made. If that means I have to start More than ten times, then I’ll do this. The good thing is, in my opinion, every try gets better and better. So despite the delays, things are going in the right direction. “
More recently, Cawthon made headlines after its political donations came to light. He then retired from video game development to focus on his family.
