The BBC and Disney have announced Future seasons of Doctor Who will stream on Disney+ outside of the UK and Ireland. It’s confirmation of a long-standing rumor that the UK public broadcaster was attempting to remove the show from its traditional distribution network.
Already in July Bloomberg reported that Disney was looking to “established” brands to bolster its streaming platform. The longest-running science fantasy series in the world, with its own global fanbase, is sure to be a huge draw for any global streamer.
Of course, new Doctor Who series will continue to air on the BBC’s own channels and the BBC’s streaming platform, iPlayer, in the UK and Ireland. The series will return in November 2023 with a series of specials to celebrate the show’s 60th anniversary, followed by a new series in 2024.
