All good things have to come to an end, but before that they get one final update. Google’s Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are slated to receive a final “Sunset” update in early 2022, although they recently passed their last guaranteed update in October.
Given that there are still 10 newer Pixel models to choose from (like the Pixel 6), it’s no surprise to learn that Google phased these two out in 2020 or has just reached the end of their lifespan. New updates now exclude the devices from the list of authorized devices.
The Pixel 3 and 3XL were also included in the recent Android 12 rollout, despite being phased out, which is nice for those who still own them. However, you will be exempted from the list of devices suitable for Android 12L, but you will see Pixel 3a and 3a XL there.
But why doesn’t Google just push the last update now? The company is likely to use the few extra months to resolve the maximum number of software problems. Given that bugs, and likely even security holes, are being patched, it’s probably a good thing to take a little more time.
Google has yet to officially announce a specific date for the last software update of Pixel 3 and 3XL beyond the vague Q1 2022. However, we will update this post as we learn more.
