Spartan Points are the currency in Halo: The Master Chief Collection, used to unlock cosmetics. You have to actually play the game to earn them, but in June 343 Industries announced it was considered to make them purchasable. The rationale was cloaked in benevolence: It was intended to be an “optional, additive alternative for players who might find the massive amount of content to be an intimidating amount of gameplay and want to progress (or skip) the grind, or perhaps want to grab the items they want.” .”
It’s true that MCC has a ton of cosmetic items, including armor effects, voices, weapon skins, and more. But if you think playing Halo is such a chore that you’d rather pay to earn that in-game loot, here’s bad news I guess: Halo: MCC is definitely not earning purchasable Spartan Points, 343 announced today. This is likely reassuring news for existing Halo players who pride themselves on having earned their in-game attire the hard way.
Earning Spartan points will also become a bit easier. It has been announced in August that Spartan Points will soon be earned with each new level reached, and that players will earn those points retroactively if they are already at a higher – or maxed out – level. Currently, challenges must be completed to earn the currency.
But that won’t happen until November, as today’s update just confirms those plans one more time. “We also want to make changes to Spartan Point collection rates and remove obstacles that players were facing. The 100-point cap will be removed, retroactive points will be granted, and we’ll be making further adjustments to the challenges to make them more rewarding, along with the return of double XP weekends,” writes 343 Industries.
All of this follows a major content update for Halo: MCC that was released last month. It added a bunch of collectibles, new forge options, and mod tools for Halo Reach many other things.
