With technology evolving at breakneck speed and healthcare companies often chronically understaffed, the industry is facing something of a cybersecurity crisis, according to a new report.
SailPoint surveyed 150 IT and IT security decision makers from healthcare organizations around the world and found that nearly all (93%) experienced an identity-related security breach in the last two years.
The findings add that organizations in the healthcare industry are facing more attacks than ever before, most of which stem from attempts to compromise identity.
Many challenges ahead
To address the problem, companies should focus on AI-enabled identity security, says the company, which sells AI-enabled identity security solutions. That being said, SailPoint says healthcare companies struggle to implement the technology due to a lack of flexibility to integrate (43%) and the skills needed to make the change (42%). About two in five struggled to maintain compliance with laws and regulations, while a third (30%) were unable to secure senior buy-in.
Still, if they don’t implement the new technology, organizations risk business downtime, compromised accounts and endpoints, lost revenue, stolen corporate data and reputational damage, according to SailPoint.

One of the more chilling examples was the May 2020 attack on a Covid-19 hospital in the Czech Republic, which made it impossible for the facility to transfer information from key clinical systems into its database and was deemed severe enough to warrant IT Shut down systems and move acute patients to an alternate facility.
SailPoint is hardly the only one discussing the problem. A recent report from Check Point Research states that in 2022 alone, the number of cyberattacks increased by more than a third (38%) year-on-year.
Healthcare was among the hardest-hit sectors, largely as companies had their hands full with the Covid-19 crisis. In fact, the healthcare industry suffered 60% more attacks in the third quarter of 2022 than in the same quarter of 2021, averaging about 1,400 attacks per organization per week, the same company found.
