It doesn’t seem that long ago that Apple announced a slew of new iPhone, Apple Watch, and MacBook Pro computers, but we’re probably just a few months away from another product launch from the company.
The internet is spinning with wild speculation today so now seems like a good time to check and have as many expectations as possible at this time.

Why a spring event?
Apple’s spring events have fallen on April 20, March 25, March 27, and March 21 in previous years. And based on the company’s typical release/update cadence, several Apple products are due now: high-end Mac minis, the iPad Air, iPhone SE, Mac Pro, larger-format iMac, and iPad Pro .
Last spring, Apple introduced AirTags, the new M1-based 24-inch iMac, M1-based iPad Pro models, and on April 20, a slightly redesigned Apple TV 4K.
Unlike other years, Apple didn’t have an event at all in spring 2020. The pandemic was growing and Apple had yet to commit to its new streaming-first approach to historically personal events. Nonetheless, Apple rolled out MacBook Air and iPad updates in March of this year, a second-generation iPhone SE in April, and a 13-inch MacBook Pro update in May.
The internet is buzzing about the spring 2022 event, in part because Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has been, as has been the norm for the past few years blow up predictions via Twitter, email and articles on the Bloomberg website.
The next iPhone SE
Contrary to some previous reports, which cited certain sources familiar with Apple’s plans, Gurman’s predictions about the spring event are just that — predictions or very educated guesses. He claims an iPhone SE is all but certain and that new iPads are likely, although his predictions about which iPads will be purely speculative.
Fortunately, we have more than Gurman’s hunches. A few months ago there were reliable reports of a 5G iPhone SE. Also, Apple
several recent submissions
with the European Economic Commission pointing out that a plethora of new iPad models are on the way. But these filings aren’t always close to launch, and these products could be for later in the year rather than spring — or they could even be for products coming out in 2023. In other words, they’re not far off.
So yes, today’s discussions of the event are largely speculation.
But as for the iPhone SE, if there’s a recent report, we’re likely looking at an A15 chip and 5G capabilities in a similar design to the current model Nikkei is to believe.
The iPad Air: probably. Other iPads: maybe
The iPad Air is Apple’s flagship iPad in many ways, as the iPad Pro offers more than most people need, the iPad mini is specialized, and the base iPad offers less than many people want. But the Air hasn’t been updated since late 2020, and its A14 chip runs slightly behind all but the base iPad.
The iPad Pro is just under a year old, but it already has the latest display technology and the fastest suitable processor. The Pro has taken more than a year to renew itself, so don’t count on it for spring. However, if it is updated, it will likely feature Apple’s second-generation M2 processor, which is expected to ship in a redesigned MacBook Air later this year. But that could easily happen in the fall instead of the spring.
The iPad, iPad mini, and Apple TV 4K are all relatively recent, as are the mainstream AirPods. However, it’s been a minute for the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.
The Mac transition may continue
Apple is still in the midst of a complete overhaul of the Mac lineup, replacing Intel chips with the company’s custom ARM-based silicon. The notable outliers there are the Mac mini (its low-end specs have the M1, but its high-end specs are still on Intel), the 27-inch iMac (which report after report claims to have replaced by a 30-inch model with chips similar to those found in the newer MacBook Pro models) and the Mac Pro.
We don’t think the Mac Pro is likely to appear before WWDC in June, but a new high-end iMac and a Mac mini are very strong candidates for a spring event.
Don’t get excited about Apple AR/VR just yet
If you were hoping to see Apple’s mixed reality glasses this early, you’ll almost certainly be disappointed. First of all, this device would be best suited for a reveal at Apple’s June developer conference. That’s because its release would come with numerous new toolkits and APIs, and requires significant developer support to be successful.
This June has long been the rumor for the goggles’ launch, but a last report claims that Apple has encountered some issues and the device may be delayed until late 2022 or even 2023.
The spring event often focuses on church services
The spring event often focuses on Apple’s services such as Music, TV+, Fitness+, News+ and iCloud. We’re expecting to see new hardware in March or April, but don’t be surprised if services take center stage. Expect new TV+ series, music features, Fitness+ workout categories and more such as: B. an expanded feature set for Apple’s recently introduced iCloud+.
Additionally, for the past year or so, we’ve been seeing hints in Apple’s software betas and elsewhere of a new, expanded smart home platform and operating system. This seems more fitting for WWDC, but you never know – keep an eye out.
