Listening to audiobooks is a great way to keep up with the latest releases without committing to a physical book. Now Spotify has added audiobooks to the mix of its offerings alongside music and podcasts, opening the door for subscribers to ditch other audiobook players and instead stick with one app for all their audio needs.
Unfortunately, Spotify’s integration of its audiobooks with the rest of its content leaves a little to be desired. Audiobooks are already fully integrated into the app, but since Spotify doesn’t put much effort into distinguishing different types of content, it can be a little difficult to find them in the sea of music and podcasts that the app also offers.
Finding audiobooks on Spotify is pretty easy as long as you know where to look. Unlike music and podcasts, Spotify’s audiobooks are not free, so you have to pay before you can start listening. Strangely, you can’t buy audiobooks directly from the app, so you’ll need to have a computer nearby to buy them and have them activated on your account.
Step 1: Open the Spotify app on your phone.
Step 2: Choose Seek tab at the bottom of the screen.
Step 3: If you have a specific audiobook in mind, search for it using the search bar at the top of the screen. Once you’ve found and selected the book you’re looking for, move on to step 6. If you want to discover new audiobooks, continue to the next step.
Note: When selecting an audiobook, these are sometimes listed as podcasts. While that’s certainly confusing, you should be able to tell the difference quickly, as podcasts are free to play, while audiobooks you haven’t purchased will be blocked until you buy them.
Step 4: Choose audio books map below Search all.
Step 5: In which audiobook section of the Spotify app lets you discover new books based on curated lists. Like music and podcasts, here various audiobooks are grouped by common attributes such as subject or author. Find and select an audiobook you want to listen to.
Step 6: Once you’ve selected an audiobook, you’ll see that it’s divided into distinct sections, usually by chapters, so you can start listening at any point you choose. Chapters are listed similar to the individual episodes of a podcast in the app. You can listen to a short audio sample of the audiobook for free by selecting the sample Bar that extends horizontally across the screen below the audiobook description. If you want access to the whole, choose the green To play Lock button on the right side of the screen.
Step 7: From here, a pop-up will appear informing you that you cannot purchase audiobooks directly from the app. Instead, you must choose e-mail received. This will send an email to the email address you have associated with your Spotify account requesting you to make a one-time purchase for the selected audiobook.
Step 8: While you can’t shop directly with the Spotify app, you can still pay for the audiobook on your phone. However, you are welcome to use a computer for the following steps.
Check your email for an email from Spotify and open it. The message tells you how much the audiobook costs. Pick the green Buy Audiobook Button.
Step 9: Once selected, you will be redirected to the browser version of Spotify Buy Audiobook. This page should look similar to the in-app version, but now instead of green To play button on the right side of the screen, you will see that it has been replaced with a green one Obtain Button. select it
Step 10: After the selection Obtain, you will be prompted to enter your payment information. Add it and then complete your purchase.
Step 11: When the purchase is complete, go back to the Spotify app and the audiobook should be unlocked in your account. If it doesn’t, you may need to close and reopen the app to gain access.
As mentioned above, audiobooks aren’t free with a Spotify account, which means you’ll have to follow the steps above every time you want access to a new book. Spotify also doesn’t tell you the cost of each book up front in the app. Instead, you can only find this information either through a browser version of Spotify or in the email the app sends you when you want to make a purchase.
When it comes to audiobook prices, they vary from book to book, but based on a quick look at some of the ones Spotify is pushing onto the landing page of its new audiobook section, there are some easy-to-identify trends – most books cost around or over $20.
Popular titles like The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring or Michelle Obama’s Will cost $25.90 and $23.90 respectively, while other big hits like A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book 1 and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone cost $36.90 and $32.90 respectively. Smaller books tend to drop between $15 and $20, but there are a handful of outliers on either side of that scale.
Regardless of whether you’re listening A Song of Ice and Fire or I’m glad my mother died (which is listed on Spotify for $13.99), you’ll probably run into a big bill if you’re an avid audiobook listener.
