As physical constraints and cost limit the amount of “camera hardware” that can be crammed into the rear camera system, some OEMs are shifting the photography battlefield to the selfie camera.
The new Huawei Nova 10 Pro comes with one 60 megapixel selfie camera supported by a secondary 8MP 2X optical zoom camera – a first for a selfie combo. Usually the secondary camera is just a bokeh sensor, but that 8-megapixel sensor should capture very interesting detail up close.
Huawei could also try to improve photo detail by using sensor fusion (mixing data from both cameras) – we are doing that speculate here, but the possibility is real.
The cameras are located in the top left area of the display, which reminded us of previous high-end phones like the P40 Pro.
On paper it seems like a vlogger’s dream selfie camera, but we’ll have to see how it performs and performs in the real world. This phone arrives on time because we’re working on one new SELFIE HW score which will complement our CAMERA HW (rear camera) score.
The rear camera system features a powerful 50-megapixel sensor with RYYB sensor, like previous high-end Huawei phones. It is supported by an 8MP bokeh sensor and an 8MP ultrawide/macro camera. It’s a good foundation and you can see some resources shifted to the selfie contraption.
Camera aside, the rest of the phone is good value for a mid-range phone (think of this as a Pixel 6a competitor). For example the 2652×1200 6.78 inch display supports a refresh rate of 120 Hz.
Also, the computing platform is the trusted Qualcomm Snapdragon 778 4G, and the name hints at an obvious fact: it’s not a 5G phone. Aside from the modem and speed, it is similar in features to the Snapdragon 778G 5G, the most powerful of the series.
Will this prevent the commercialization of the phone? We’re not sure, as many buyers might be willing to trade some networking features for one of the best selfie camera specs we’ve seen.
Another thing that caught our attention is this 100W fast charge which is very rare in this price range. It certainly makes up for the fact that the battery capacity is under 5000mAh (4500mAh).
The impressive charging speed can easily replace a measly 500mAh capacity, especially if you have access to an outlet. With 100W fast charging, you can probably charge 500mAh in less than 3 minutes.
