Hyundai and kia are recalling nearly 20,000 of their latest electric vehicles. The problem affects the impressive Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6, two electric vehicles built using the Korean OEMs’ new E-GMP platform.
Specifically, it is about the parking brake function of electric vehicles. If a voltage fluctuation occurs while the vehicle is parked and off, a command signal from the shift controller could disengage the park pawl, potentially allowing the car to roll.
The problem was identified by automakers in Korea; Hyundai says it has received four claims that Ioniq 5s are affected.
The recall affects 9,014 Kia EV6 and 10,729 Hyundai Ioniq 5, and owners are being advised to use the electronic parking brake when parking their vehicles, rather than simply park and walk away. Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by the automakers to schedule a software fix.
Tesla had a similar issue in 2017 and had to recall 53,000 Model S and X models built in 2016.
