The iiRcade home arcade platform becomes more customizable with a new accessory initiative, offering support for a range of third-party controllers and devices as an alternative to traditional joysticks. It should give players better options for certain games that don’t suit the standard arcade controls.
The initiative, which iiRcade dubs the Open Arcade Accessory Platform, starts with support for “off the shelf” spinners and trackball controllers, meaning you don’t need to make any changes to get them working on iiRcade. The standard iiRcade systems now available support these controllers via Bluetooth. Since the upcoming Gold Edition models will also include USB ports on the underside of the panel, these will also support USB connections in addition to Bluetooth.
“Any new games that can use the accessory are still designed to work with the standard joystick controllers of both the Classic and Gold editions of iiRcade, so that every iiRcade owner can enjoy the new games without the accessory The company said in a press release. This seems to indicate that lightgun games are off the menu, at least for now. The only competitor making a big push in this area is Arcade1Up, as its standalone cases don’t require any form of cross-game compatibility to function properly.
iiRcade recently introduced its Gold Edition line, available with a pre-order discount of $799 before jumping to $999 after this period ends. The new line features a more traditional arcade form factor, a lighted marquee, and a new control panel that can be opened and modified without voiding the warranty. In addition to the 11 bundled games, each iiRcade system has access to the online store for incremental purchases of additional games.
