Apple’s second-generation AirPods Pro look just like the original model that debuted in October 2019. However, the new earbuds include some hardware changes that make them better than their predecessor in every way.
So if you’re waiting to buy a new pair of wireless earbuds, check out all the key new features the AirPods Pro 2 are bringing to the table.
1. Improved sound quality and ANC
Thanks to the latest H2 chip, a new low-distortion audio driver, and a custom amplifier, the second-gen AirPods Pro deliver significantly better sound quality and active noise cancellation (ANC).
Apple claims the new earbuds cancel up to twice as much noise compared to the previous model. Bass is also richer, with a wider soundstage that helps improve overall clarity.
2. Better fit in the ear
What good is great sound quality if your earbuds keep falling out of your ears? It looks like the company has heard some of your complaints, as the new AirPods Pro come with an extra set of XS-sized ear tips to give those with small ear canals a better in-ear fit.
This allows the earbuds to block more noise passively, which indirectly improves ANC performance and sound quality. The better fit also helps when using the AirPods Pro to hear conversations better.
3. Adaptive Transparency
The second-gen AirPods Pro take the existing Transparency mode to the next level with Adaptive Transparency. Thanks to the powerful new H2 chip, the earphones can dynamically reduce the harsh ambient noise.
So you can keep an eye on your surroundings or continue a conversation without being confronted with harsh construction or traffic noise.
4. New charging case with “Find My” integration
The new second generation AirPods Pro charging case is dust and water resistant, just like the earbuds. There is also a lanyard loop for added convenience. If you order the AirPods Pro 2 online via the Apple Store, you can even engrave your favorite Memoji on the charging case.
Another highlight of the new charging case is the Find My integration and a built-in speaker. If you have an iPhone with a U1 chip, you can use the Precise Search feature in the Find My app to find the exact location of AirPods Pro. And the built-in speaker of the charging case plays a loud sound for you to find it quickly.
5. Longer battery life
Despite the better sound quality and ANC, Apple claims the AirPods Pro 2 can last 1.5 hours longer than the previous model. With ANC enabled, the earbuds can offer up to six hours of music playback. The charging case can extend this to up to 30 hours.
In addition, charging the new AirPods Pro is much more convenient. You can charge the carrying case using your Apple Watch’s magnetic puck or a third-party Qi-certified charger. This makes charging your AirPods much less of a headache when you travel. The case also continues to support MagSafe charging for added convenience.
6. Touch Controls
Unlike the original AirPods Pro, you don’t need to press the stem to adjust music playback or volume. You get touch controls on the AirPods Pro 2. This allows you to adjust the volume with a slight swipe up or down. And to answer phone calls or control music playback, you have to press gently on the stem.
Apple has also improved the skin detection sensor, allowing the earbuds to more accurately recognize when to resume or stop music playback.
AirPods Pro 2 comes with some big upgrades
Don’t be fooled by the design of the second-gen AirPods Pro. While they’re not as sleek as some other wireless earbuds on the market, Apple has thoroughly redesigned the innards to offer better sound quality, battery life, and user experience.
Even better, despite these improvements, the new AirPods Pro carry the same $249 price tag as their predecessor. So if you’re looking to buy a pair of wireless earbuds for your iPhone and have the budget to do so, you can’t go wrong with the AirPods Pro 2.
