When the Lego Optimus Prime was announced, everyone was talking. It’s a Lego kit that actually transforms, much like the vast majority of Transformers. But by the time this set releases on June 1st, a lot of people are probably wondering, “How long does it take to put this together?” Luckily, we have that answer for you.
Hasbro sent us an Optimus Prime to build and try out, and while I’m not the traditional Lego maniac, I have many years of experience building Lego sets. So all in all, Optimus Prime lasted 3 hours, 31 minutes and 27 seconds from start to finish. That answers the question the headline raises here, but there’s more to it than that.
The Optimus Prime box contains 10 bags filled with Lego pieces. Each bag assembles a part of the Transformer – torso, legs, arms, etc. – and on average, each bag took about 21 minutes to complete. There were occasional setbacks, such as my eyesight deteriorating as I got older and I couldn’t identify parts immediately, or not being able to follow instructions and placing a part in the wrong place and having to go back. Below is a breakdown of how long it took to put together each bag, along with some photos of the process along the way.
Completion Time of Lego Optimus Prime Bag:
- Bag 1: 21:09
- Bag 2: 20:08
- Bag 3: 15:43
- Bag 4: 25:04
- Bag 5: 26:32
- Bag 6: 21:36
- Bag 7: 19:43
- Bag 8: 23:49
- Pocket 9: 17:22
- Pocket 10:20:21
This also took a little over three and a half hours and I went through it relatively quickly for my skill level. And converting Optimus from a robot to a tractor-trailer was relatively easy. However, I had some issues with one of the pivot points getting stuck and Optimus’ torso immediately flaked off. It wasn’t a big deal as the figure snapped right back into place. And that was a difficult piece. I was very surprised at how much weight this was when fully built. It’s an extremely cool looking Lego set that any Transformers fan would love to have,
