LG Electronics India will start local production of side-by-side refrigerators in the country after inaugurating a production line at its Pune factory. The facility in Ranjangaon, Pune, which opened with an investment of around £200 million, will manufacture side-by-side fridges in addition to two-door and single-door fridges.
“This enlargement is a step forward in making India a country in its own right. LG Electronics firmly believes in making India a strong manufacturing hub. We will also export from this facility,” said Hong Ju Jeon, General Manager of LG Electronics India.
In addition, LG’s Pune factory, which covers 52.8 hectares of land, also produces single and double-door refrigerators, televisions, washing machines, air conditioners and monitors.
With a production capacity of 200,000 side-by-side cooling units per year, LG Electronics stated that this production expansion will be crucial to meet increasing customer demand and expand the company’s product line in the Indian market.
Hyun Uk Lee, President of LG Electronics Global Refrigerator, Hong Ju Jeon, General Manager of LG Electronics India, and others attended the inauguration of the new facility.
“Localization was a key difference for us as we consistently make products with Indian inputs,” said Jeon.
Each year he added: “We are expanding our local manufacturing activities. Last year we started the production of Windows Inverter AC in India at a manufacturing site in Noida. This year we start producing side-by-side refrigerators in India at a manufacturing facility in Pune. The company, which was founded in India in January 1997 and has existed for over 25 years, has two production plants in Greater Noida and Pune.
