Listen on two devices at the same time with these wireless earbuds

Headsets have always been one of a PC gamer’s best friend, but earbuds are slowly gaining ground. Not everyone wants the closed feel of a full headset, and some people are looking for something that’s easy to use both on the go and at their battle station. Wireless earbuds are a particularly lighter alternative to traditional headphones and keep your head relatively free. And with this pair, you can listen to two different sources at the same time.

Multipoint connectivity for wireless devices is not new, but most implementations do not allow them all to be used at once. Instead, they may require manual switching or, for example, connect to your phone when it specifically receives a call. But acc gizmodoyou can do a little more with Genki’s new Waveform earphones.

The company behind Genki, Human Things, has dubbed this new functionality DualStream. It lets you play a game on your PC while on a call, and they both broadcast over the same set of wireless buds. For anyone looking to rid their PC of other processes while gaming, this could be seriously useful, especially for gaming on the go. Another use case could be the use of zoom when listening to music. The important part here is: two devices, one set of earbuds at the same time, wirelessly. But there is a small catch.

The charging case for the buds can be connected to audio devices via a cable, whether audio jack, USB C or Lightning. This acts as a dongle, allowing most devices to send a signal to the Waveform earbuds, even if they don’t have wireless capabilities of their own. This allows Genki’s new earbuds to deliver two streams simultaneously, one of which must be through this adapter.

It’s a bit of a letdown at first, knowing you can’t easily connect two devices natively via Bluetooth when that feels like a big part of this product’s premise. However, the case is small and connecting to something like a PC or laptop probably won’t be a big deal. It also extends functionality to far more devices than just a regular Bluetooth mode, although it can also mean that some wireless features don’t work quite as usual. Ultimately, it still seems like a step up from PC dongle and Bluetooth solutions.

The waveform buds are currently looking for funding on Kickstarter, But given that Human Things has a good track record on the platform, it’s not as much of a red flag as it could be. The company has also said it already has the chips to start manufacturing, so hopefully delays won’t be an issue.

You can currently snag one of the Early Bird Tier Promises for $199, which is an expensive set of headphones, but given the unique functionality, it might just be worth it.
