Meta joins Google, Microsoft and other big names to get behind ChatGPT-style AI. Mark Zuckerberg has revealed that his company wants to develop “AI personas” in the long term. It is currently investigating helpers for several media formats. You might see advanced chat features in Messenger and WhatsApp, or unique Instagram filters and ads. Video and “multimodal” content could also benefit, says Zuckerberg. In the near future you will see an emphasis on tools for creation and expression.
The social media giant is also consolidating its generative AI teams into a single group to accelerate efforts in this burgeoning space, the executive adds. He gives no further details and warns that “a lot of groundwork needs to be done” before the most advanced projects come to fruition.
The company isn’t new to some level of user-focused AI. For example, chatbots were introduced to Messenger in 2016. However, this represents a significant expansion and is not surprising given the industry’s growing focus on generative AI. Internet giants like Google are reportedly feeling competitive pressure from OpenAI’s ChatGPT as it could theoretically undermine search and other key businesses. Zuckerberg said during Meta’s last earnings call that he wanted the company to become a “leader” in generative AI, but that could also provide a defensive tool.
The move doesn’t come at a good time, however. Meta’s revenue is still shrinking, and moving to the Metaverse is costing billions of dollars in its Reality Labs unit. Over 11,000 jobs have recently been cut to cut costs and weather a tough economy. While platforms like Facebook and Instagram continue to gain users, the company isn’t as stable as it used to be.
