Microsoft’s use of AI on the web will go beyond smarter Bing searches. The company is Update its Edge browser with an “AI-powered copilot” to help with everyday tasks. Integration with the new Bing can help you extract key insights from a document, compare content, and even design posts (e.g. on LinkedIn) with a specific format, length, or tone.
The revamped interface revolves around a new sidebar. You can use a chat feature in this area to ask questions like you would on Bing, while a compose option helps you write new content using prompts. A new look also awaits you.
Both Bing and the updated Edge are based on a new AI model, Prometheus, built using OpenAI. While it takes some lessons from the popular ChatGPT conversational AI, it’s billed as more powerful and optimized for search. Microsoft also claims it’s a “responsible” platform, with protections from abuse and bugs in place at all levels.
The new edge is accessible now in preview form. While Bing is the highlight of Microsoft’s AI announcements, the new browser clearly plays an important role. The AI capabilities theoretically give Edge an edge over Chrome, Safari, and other browsers. How long a lead will last is of course uncertain. Google is hosting an event tomorrow (February 8) that could shed light on its offering to competitor ChatGPT, and it won’t come as a surprise if AI-powered search is part of that strategy.
