Mobile gaming is growing rapidly in India. Consumer demand for spectacular audio experiences on their smartphones has increased. Hence, game developers and publishers had to step up to meet the demands of the modern Indian gamer.
Moong Labs, one of those developers and publishers of free-to-play F2P games for smartphones and tablets, collaborated with Dolby Laboratories and released a mobile game called “Epic Cricket” in Dolby Atmos.
Epic Cricket in Dolby Atmos is a mobile cricket gaming experience that offers incredible and immersive gameplay. The team behind the game has used complex algorithms and techniques to create an amazingly realistic experience.
Dolby Atmos makes critical moments in Epic Cricket feel more realistic. The player will be able to experience a distinctly loud roar of the crowd from the stands where the ball travels and the sound of a wave as the player prepares for the next delivery. Additionally, the clearly audible chattering of the wicketkeeper behind the stumps adds to the realism of the game.
We spoke to Ashim Mathur, Senior Regional Director, Japan & Emerging Markets, Dolby Laboratories, Samit Babbar, Head of Product, Moong Labs, and Madhav Sheth, CEO, Realme India, VP, Realme and President, Realme International Business Group, in Contacted on the occasion of the launch. Would you say that gamers demand better sound experiences in games? If so, when did this demand start to grow, and how does having Dolby Atmos in devices and content help gamers?
Ashim Mathur: The world of mobile gaming in India is an interesting place right now. In recent years, this sector has experienced a boom as more and more Indians turn to mobile gaming on the go or at home. How did the collaboration with Moong Labs and realme come about?

We have a long association with Realme on the device front and are very excited to work with them to deliver the best gaming experience from a service and device perspective. With mobile gaming gaining momentum in India and cricket taking center stage for the nation, it was the right time for us to partner with Moonglabs on Epic Cricket-Big League to bring our players an unprecedented audio experience.
Everything fell into place with the launch of Realmes Pad X in Dolby Atmos and Moonglabs releasing Epic Cricket – Big League in Dolby Atmos for mobile gaming fans in India. As three distinct entities, we share a common goal of providing players with an immersive experience from a Content + Device + Service perspective.
Will we see more such collaborations with different publishing studios?

Mobile gaming has grown exponentially in India over the years. In which direction do you see the industry?
Samit Babbar: We are a mobile-first gaming nation. For the majority of gamers in India, mobile devices are the primary means of consuming games and this trend will continue to grow. Even OEMs have recognized this trend and launched devices that appeal to such an audience. We expect the innovations in hardware and 5G connectivity to become a reality in the coming years – online gaming on mobile devices will explode. While most consumers play casual games, with the rise of esports, mobile gaming will become mainstream and more people will get involved.
Games that require spatial awareness need a good sound engine. What was the reason Epic Cricket was made with Dolby’s Atmos? How does this affect the gaming experience?
Samit Babbar: Dolby is a pioneer in sound technology – working with them to build Epic Cricket in Dolby Atmos was a no-brainer. Gamers today want immersive experiences from their games, and Dolby Atmos allows us to bring a whole new level of immersive gameplay to put players right in the action with spatial audio. How has consumer gaming behavior evolved? And how do game developers and publishing studios deal with this evolving behavior?

The most recent observed trend is the shift from PC or console gaming to smartphone gaming, due to smartphones making gaming accessible to an enormously large audience. This trend has allowed many gaming enthusiasts to enter the smartphone gaming industry. The future of online gaming will continue to grow as the time spent playing games will increase. The room for growth in the industry is huge due to deeper internet penetration and mobile gaming. With that in mind, we often take feedback from players on several of our smartphone series to improve the user experience. With the arrival of 5G, gaming will become easier and any kind of lag in cloud gaming will be reduced.
