The next foldable Moto from Moto, believed to be dubbed the Motorola Razr 2022, is emerging as a big reinvention for the family – it’s the third generation of the phone, after the Motorola Razr 2019 and Razr 2020, but it could be the first to really do it worth paying attention to.
Motorola skipped a year without a Razr 2021 in its pattern, which has given the company even more time to create the best foldable it can – leaks also suggest it will have some impressive specs.
We don’t have solid confirmation that Motorola is working on a third generation Razr phone, but it seems likely at the annual rates so far. There is a lot of competition for Moto, especially with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, which is slated to hit the market in late 2021, and the iPhone Flip, which is hoped for 2022.
We refer to this phone as the Motorola Razr 2022 as we originally called it the Razr 2021 but it never showed up. Much of our wish-list, which you can read below, has stayed the same – Motorola’s first two foldables were interesting but flawed, so there’s a lot of room for improvement here.
We also took a look at when the Motorola Razr is expected to land in 2022 and what it could cost. All of this can be found below. And as soon as there are rumors or news about it, we’ll add that too.

To get to the point
- What is it? The next foldable phone from Motorola
- When is it out? Maybe at the end of 2022
- How much will it cost? Maybe around $ 1,399 / £ 1,399 (about AU $ 1,900)
Motorola Razr 2021 release date and price
There are no rumors of a release date yet, but the Motorola Razr 2020 was announced on September 9th, 2020 and went on sale about a week later on September 15th. However, the Motorola Razr 2019 was announced in November 2019 and didn’t go on sale until February 2020.
Because of this, Motorola doesn’t have a unified release schedule for this range, so it’s hard to predict when the Motorola Razr will launch in 2022, but for now our best guess would be in September or around September as that’s around that. Anniversary of the last model.
We initially expected a model for 2021, but that obviously never showed up. Hopefully, as a result, the 2022 Razr will see major improvements.
There’s no news on the price either, but the Motorola Razr 2020 was $ 1,399 / £ 1,399 (around $ 1,900) when it launched, so we may see a similar price for the 2021 model.
Motorola Razr 2022 and Rumors
When rumors first claimed that the Motorola Razr 2021 had been canceled, the source gave a promising glimmer of hope: Apparently the company had skipped a year in order to be able to work on the perfect folding device.
Later leaks have indicated that this could be true. One such piece of information is that the phone could have a top-end processor in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which would make the phone much more powerful than the Razr 2019 and 2020. These had mid-range chipsets.
The leak also points to a redesigned phone with a smaller notch, a 50 MP main camera with a 32 MP front camera and 13 MP ultra-wide companions, a 120 Hz AMOLED screen, and up to 512 GB Memory.
That sounds too good to be true, but the source also says the battery capacity is 2,800 mAh, which is … small.
What we want to see
The Motorola Razr 2020 has a lot to please, but also a lot of problems, which is why we only gave it three stars in our test. In order for the Motorola Razr to become a five-star phone in 2021, here is what it could do.
1. A lower price
The Motorola Razr 2020 isn’t as expensive as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, but it still costs more than most traditional smartphones, even the top of the range, and it’s not a top of the line itself.
Therefore, and especially in view of the competition from the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip range, we would like a lower price for the Motorola Razr 2021. If it can get closer to $ 1,000 / £ 1,000 it would be a lot more tempting.
2. Better battery life
One of our main complaints with the Razr 2020 is battery life. Although the phone has two screens, the phone only has a 2,800 mAh battery, which is much smaller than most phones, and that means a lifespan of often less than a day in our tests.
It would probably be better if you made extensive use of the small secondary screen instead of the main display, and it might be difficult to fit a much larger battery into it without sacrificing the compact size that is part of the appeal, but a phone doesn’t Reliably lasts a day is not a phone that can be relied on.
3. No more creaking
Another problem we had with the Motorola Razr 2020 was the hinge creaking when the screen is opened. This was an issue with the 2019 model too, but we really hope it’s fixed for the Motorola Razr 2021.
While Motorola affirms the creak isn’t something to worry about, it isn’t something a premium device is supposed to show off, either.
4. A better screen
The Razr 2020 has two screens, but neither of them is anything special. Its 6.2-inch main screen is slightly lower resolution than most high-end and even many mid-range phones at 876 x 2142 pixels, and it also only has a basic refresh rate of 60 Hz.
Its second screen is even less impressive at 2.7 inches and 600 x 800, although that’s more forgivable as it is designed as a smaller, smaller screen.
For the Motorola Razr 2021, we really want to see some upgrades, at least on the main display. The size of the current model is okay, but a higher resolution and refresh rate would definitely help.
5. A screen at any angle
Speaking of the screen, the Razr 2020’s main display can either be open or closed flat, but the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip allows you to use the phone at any angle. So if you want to half open the main screen, for example to place it flat at a right angle, you can.
We want the Motorola Razr 2021 to have this capability too. It’s a small thing, but it helps to get the most out of a collapsible screen.
6. More cameras
The cameras on the Razr 2020 aren’t bad in and of themselves, but they’re pretty basic as there is only one 48MP f / 1.7 main camera and one 20MP f / 2.2 selfie camera, so you don’t get the range of snaps that are even quite right Phones are affordable now often.
We then want more cameras for the Motorola Razr 2021, taking into account at least main, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto lenses.
7. Top class power
The Motorola Razr 2020 has an upper mid-range Snapdragon 765G chipset, but since this phone costs more than most flagships, we’d want some high-end performance.
So if the Motorola Razr 2021 isn’t significantly cheaper, we’d like it to include the Snapdragon 888 chipset (like the Samsung Galaxy S21, for example).
- We are also waiting for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3
