Just over a month after the release of Netflix Resident Evil Season 1 (opens in new tab) Series starring Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart and Lance Reddick has been cancelled.
Notice of cancellation coming out meeting (opens in new tab), stating that the series didn’t do particularly well. It debuted in second place in Netflix’s top 10 with 72.7 million hours watched (which sounds like a lot to me), but it didn’t see a significant increase in week two, pulling on 73.3 million hours to finish third to reach place. a sign that there was no word of mouth. It dropped out of the top ten entirely by week three.
The Resident Evil series also fared poorly with critics and viewers. It has a critical rating of 55% Rotten tomatoes (opens in new tab)and just an average audience rating of 27%.
It’s an unfortunate conclusion to a series that — okay, I can’t say it was technically promising, but it had Lance Reddick (opens in new tab) as the legendary villain Albert Wesker, and that’s off to a pretty strong start in my opinion. The final trailer had a certain “general zombie movie” vibe to it (although that giant spider was pretty horrific), but that’s not necessarily a bad thing if Netflix wanted to meaningfully push the boundaries of the existing Resident Evil fandom. I don’t think that’s happening now.
This was actually Netflix’s second Resident Evil series, following Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (opens in new tab). It also sucked but hasn’t been officially canceled yet.
