Lenovo is introducing many new products at Mobile World Congres 2023, but one that caught our attention is this Second generation Lenovo ThinkPad Z series, with the Z16 and Z13 laptops. The original Z Series was unveiled at CES 2022 last year.
The new ThinkPad Z series is also based on one AMD only platform, is considered AMD’s flagship hardware in this category. According to Lenovo, the 2023 version has significantly more computing power +50% CPU speed (up to 64GB RAM!) and +30% faster graphics.
The system also features AMD’s Smartshift technology, which can intelligently redirect power to/from the CPU/GPU depending on which unit needs a performance boost at any given time.
Laptop users often fail to realize that such critical components are often limited by the availability of power (and thermals) rather than their inherent technical limitations. Smartshift gives both the CPU and GPU additional headroom.
sustainability is also an integral part of the Z Series design, with innovative elements such as the new optional Flax fiber top cover, a bio-based material that meets ThinkPad standards. It replaces last year’s faux leather option.
You can also expect recycled materials, such as 100% compostable packaging, if possible. This laptop could help some companies hit their ESG targets for the year, so it’s not a bad strategy!
The Z series isn’t your typical ThinkPad either, as Lenovo is trying to attract new users who prefer these new angular designs and options on top of all the good stuff ThinkPads are known for.
The company has Optimized the design for hybrid working, and that could be really useful in a world where online meetings are ubiquitous. There’s no end in sight, and even with some pressure to return to the office, video conferencing will continue for the foreseeable future.
Lenovo says it picked higher quality FHD webcams, with some options that include an infrared 3D camera. This isn’t the fanciest built-in webcam Lenovo has, but I’m glad that webcams have become an item that product managers are now focusing on.
If you’re just getting into a video call, you can double-click the trackpoint button to bring up a dedicated webcam/audio dialog menu to quickly review and change settings.
Lenovo has excellent display options for the new Z series, with a 4K OLED (Z16) and 2.8K OLED (Z16) and various IPS LCD options.
Overall, this is an excellent data-centric advancement of this new ThinkPad series and we’re excited to see it in action. Check the current specifications below. Pricing information usually comes later in the year.
