Nintendo has decided not to attend this year’s E3. “We take our involvement in each event on a case-by-case basis and are always considering different ways to engage with our fans,” Nintendo said in a statement to Engadget. “Since this year’s E3 trade fair did not fit into our planning, we decided against participating. However, we have been and still are a strong supporter of ESA [Entertainment Software Association] and E3.”
Nintendo typically has a presence in the E3 exhibition space and has frequently conducted treehouse broadcasts in addition to a Direct throughout the event. The company attended the last proper edition of E3 in 2019, as well as the digital-only affair in 2021. There was no E3 in 2020 or 2022.
earlier this month, IGN reported that Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony all said goodbye to E3 this year. Sony hasn’t been at the event since 2018, but neither the company nor Microsoft have publicly confirmed plans for this year’s edition. Regardless, Microsoft will host its big annual exhibition this summer in Los Angeles. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer recently implied It’s taking place around the same time as E3, which will take place between June 13th and 16th.
The absence of even one of the big three console manufacturers from E3 is a blow to ESA, let alone all of them. Summer Game Fest threatens to steal more of the faithful event’s thunder too. But hey, at least Ubisoft will be at E3.
