Next month, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will be able to purchase Sega Genesis games as part of a DLC pack of N64 titles. And to make the gaming experience as authentic as possible, the gaming giant is also selling wireless N64 and Genesis controllers exclusively to Switch Online subscribers. The gaming giant showed off a three-button Genesis controller on its recent direct stream in the west. Based on a tweet from Nintendo Japan, however, will instead release a six-button version in its home country.
Nintendo has confirmed this Polygon that the six-button Genesis controller will be available exclusively in Japan. A representative from Nintendo of America told the publication that “different regions make different decisions based on a variety of factors,” and that the three-button model is the most popular and well-known version in the US and Canada. As the publication notes, the three-button model came first, and the six-button model wasn’t released until fighting games began to grow in popularity. Playing tracks like Street fighter was easier to puree with more buttons. Note that the 2019 Sega Genesis Mini also launched outside of Japan with a three-button controller, while the Japanese version launched with a six-button model.
Even if you can find a way to import the controller for Japan only, it might be better to wait for other players to confirm that it will work with consoles in your area. Nintendo doesn’t have a release date for the three-button model yet, but it will set you back by $ 50 when it becomes available.
