EA is scrambling for damage control after an industry insider said Battlefield 2042 has been relegated to a “skeleton crew” to focus on the next installment in the series.
Jeff Grubb spilled the Battlefield 2042 beans on his Giant Bomb show Grubbsnax. According to Grubb, the game was left to a barebones development team tasked with getting the promised seasonal content out as quickly and cheaply as possible.
But EA has stepped in to say that’s definitely not the case. Meanwhile, Battlefield Season 1 content launches today with a single map, a new weapon, a Specialist, and two helicopters. What decidedly ruffled fans’ feathers – just take a look Posts on the subreddit (opens in new tab).
“This game is basically down to a skeleton team,” Grubb said (via VGC (opens in new tab)). “It comes down to liking the bare bones, and these people are specifically just working on the promised additional seasons that the game needs to meet the demands of the high-end version it sells.”
Grubb colorfully describes the current state of development as “Abandon Ship Time”. He adds that “the skeleton crew is working to pump the stuff out as quickly and cheaply as possible.”
On GrubbSnax today, I said that Battlefield is now just a small crew trying to keep up with their DLC commitments. EA has come forward to say this is not true. pic.twitter.com/Wpj79d9pMMJune 8, 2022
Apparently EA is already focused on the next game in the Battlefield franchise, leaving this small team to manage all four seasons of live service content expected to drop later this year.
“They are doing this to get everyone onto the new Battlefield as quickly as possible. The real core crew of Battlefield developers is already working on it [the next title].”
EA has responded to Grubbs’ claims, calling them “untrue” in a statement he shared Twitter (opens in new tab). The publisher says he has a “significant team from across the studios” working on Battlefield 2042. The developers are reportedly working to “continue to evolve and improve the Battlefield 2042 experience for all players.”
If EA wants people to embrace that line, we should be releasing some timely and decent seasonal content soon. Because the current content is currently not doing a very convincing job on its own.
