At its global launch event in New York, OnePlus introduced its new high-performance smartphone OnePlus 10T. As with other “T” series phones, it aims to surpass a few key features while offering maximum value (features for the price), something OnePlus has built its brand on.
To achieve this goal, OnePlus has focused on several things, but if we had to get straight to the point, it would come down to this excellent performance of the computing platform and fast battery charging.
According to OnePlus, many users want extreme performance (at a reasonable price), and that’s essentially what this phone is designed for. Of course, other aspects of the phone are well implemented and feel great, but they could be a little less rounded or luxurious compared to the OnePlus 10 Pro.
The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 doesn’t need a presentation from a computing power point of view. We covered the original Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (Non-Plus) and showed the “Plus” version of this platform to increase speed and power efficiency. So follow the links to learn more about these two processors.
When it comes to RAM and storage, there are two 10T variants, one with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage and another with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storagefor $100 more.
Such performance is great for gaming, which is an ideal use case for such a powerful phone. However, keep in mind that increased performance could also be felt in other compute- or graphics-intensive apps, although they may not be mentioned in OnePlus’ announcements.
OnePlus has also focused on this sustained performance, which is realized by the “most powerful cooling system ever in a OnePlus smartphone”. That’s because of a larger vapor chamber heatsink made with the latest manufacturing technology.
Either way, we’ll have to see the ongoing performance benchmarks, but it’s a good sign that OnePlus is promoting this feature.
Intense computing power equates to more battery usage, and that’s why OnePlus has worked hard on battery charging speeds. If you spend a lot of time playing the latest games in high definition, it’s impossible to get “all day battery” regardless of your phone.
If we accept the reality that charging is required, we might as well charge as soon as possible. That’s where the Charge with 150W SUPERVOOC Endurance Edition from OnePlus comes into play. This makes it possible to charge from 1% to 100% in just 19 minutes. That’s insanely fast.
150W is the maximum charging speed that any OnePlus 10T can support out of the box and with the included fast charger. However, 150W applies to 220V European style sockets. If you connect the charger to a US 110V, the maximum wattage will drop 120Wwhich is still very fast.
Other OEMs have also shown specialty phones with extreme charging speeds, but big brands tend to charge at a much lower rate, typically from 25W to 45W on the high-end, which is many times slower.
Even if you don’t care for the extreme performance, a frequent traveler or street fighter will appreciate the battery charging aspect of this handset. You could quickly top up the phone in minutes before boarding a flight.
OnePlus has even launched an 80W car charger, the highest we’ve had our hands on. Fast loading the 4800mAh battery is something everyone can benefit from, not just gamers or techies.
From a design perspective, the OnePlus 10T uses a similar design language to our OnePlus 10 Pro, although there are minor differences like the smooth camera bump design.
The big difference is the disappearance of the notifications slider, and that’s been making some noise on the internet. It’s understandable that for hardcore OnePlus fans, removing this iconic feature would be unthinkable.
The good news on this subject is that during the global media briefing we attended in NYC, the OnePlus development team committed to working hard to bring the slider back in the future (= “you’ve been heard”).
For now, OnePlus said it needs to let go of that slider to accommodate better cooling, faster charging, and increased antenna count. Without insight into their industrial design and cost-press process, we can’t make a judgment, but from our experience it seems to have been a tough decision.
We mentioned that the phone has more antennas, including some in the center of the back cover. That’s because OnePlus wanted to ensure optimal communication, even when you’re holding the phone by the four corners to play.
Typically, the antennas are located at the edges or at the corner (or both!). This way some antennas will not be covered when you hold the phone.
That 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display offers refresh rates of 60, 90 and 120 Hz, high brightness (950 NITs) and HDR10 compatibility. Its resolution might not be the highest on the market, but even the most high-end phones don’t make full use of its pixel density.
The OnePlus 10T launches Oxygen OS 12.1, OnePlus’ customization layer on Android 12. However, the company has launched Oxygen OS 13, coming first to the OnePlus 10 Pro before making its way to the OnePlus 10T (date TBD) power.
The 8/128GB version comes with an MSRP of $649which should give it incredible value for money, making it very tempting for gamers who don’t want to compromise on performance but are on a tight budget.
For $100 more ($749 MSRP) get the 16/256GB model, which we recommend if you plan to download a lot of HD movies, record a lot of videos, or run a lot of heavy apps. Stay tuned for our full review of the phone! The OnePlus 10T is shaping up to be an attractive, high-performance phone for the masses.
