Zacian will soon be returning to five-star Raid Battles for a limited-time appearance at a Pokemon Go Gym near you. This legendary Pokémon returns alongside Pokémon Go after a long absence Pokémon World Championship event. We haven’t seen Zacian in raids for about a year since its initial release, so new players and those who might be coming back from a hiatus are likely willing to battle the warrior-type Pokémon and add it to their collections. Veterans also have an opportunity to earn more Candy and Candy XL to bolster those they may already have.
Zacian raid schedule
Zacian will appear as a five-star raid boss on August 18 at 10:00 local time and will remain in five-star raids until the same time on August 31, but it will share that spot with its “sibling” Zamazenta . Raids generally don’t follow a set schedule, and Zacian raids will appear randomly in arenas around the world during this time, but you’ll get a notification from the game if a raid starts nearby.
Your best chance of finding a Zacian Raid (or many of them) is during Raid Hours, where the Zacian is exclusively featured. Every Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time, most gyms host five-star raids that trainers can work together to defeat. There are two raid hours that take place during Zacian’s raid stay, but only the first on August 24th will feature Zacian. As always, you’ll need your free daily Raid Pass or a Premium Battle Pass to join a Raid in person, or a Remote Raid Pass to join a Raid remotely.
Can I catch a Shiny Zacian?
Although this is Zacian’s second appearance in five-star raids in Pokemon Go, his shiny form is still unavailable. This may prompt some trainers to wait until its inevitable shiny release sometime in the future, but this is still a great opportunity to earn Candy and Candy XL to Energize any of the Zacian you may have caught take care of.
Zacian Weaknesses and Counterattacks
Zacian is a Fairy-type Pokémon. This means that it is weak against Steel and Poison-type attacks. Some recommended Pokemon are:
- Steel: Metagross, Mega Scizor, Dialga, Excadrill
- Poison: Mega Gengar, Mega Beedrill, Nihilego, Roserade
A Mega Tip: A Mega Evolved Pokémon increases the damage of all Pokémon in the raid by 10% and increases the damage of all Pokémon that use attacks that share a type with the Mega Evolved Pokémon by 30%. Coordinate these Megas with your raid group for extra damage. Mega Steelix boosts your allies’ Steel attacks, but due to its defensive-leaning stats and lack of a fast Steel attack, it doesn’t do much damage itself.
Don’t be afraid of the shadows: Shadow Pokémon deal 20% more damage than their non-shadow counterparts, so the shadow versions of any suggested Pokémon they have can help you win.
Types to avoid
Zacian’s Fairy-type moves like Play Rough deal super effective damage to Dark, Fighting, and Dragon-type Pokemon, and other moves like Close Combat can give him cover against Steel-type Pokemon that are usually strong against it. Also, keep in mind that Fairy-type Pokemon like Zacian resist Dark, Bug, and Fighting-type attacks, and double resist Dragon-type attacks. Stay away from these types of Pokemon.
Should you ambush Zacian without registering it in your Pokédex? It depends on your playstyle and goals. If your main focus is raiding and PvE content, then Zacian might be one to save your coins on. Zacian lacks fast Fairy-type movement, meaning it’s mostly outperformed by other Fairy-type Pokémon as a raid attacker that can dish out more consistent Fairy-type damage, like Gardevoir and Togekiss. However, Zacian is not useless; It’s a Legendary Pokemon with stats to match its title, and it can be useful against raid bosses like Giratina, which takes super effective damage from Zacian’s most useful quick move, Growl. Zacian also has another form, the Crowned Sword form, which will likely be released in Pokemon Go at some point in the future. This form gains even better stats, gains the secondary Steel type, and potentially has a different moveset that could make it more useful in raids.
However, if you’re a player more focused on PvP, Zacian is not a boss to miss. Zacian is an integral part of the Master League in the Go Battle League. Its wide range of charged moves like Wild Charge, Close Combat, and Play Rough give it the versatility to act as a hard-to-wall safe-swap. It also serves as a powerful check for Dialga, the long-reigning king of the Master League meta. Zacian can’t be found with a low enough CP to qualify for the Great League and doesn’t do as well in the Ultra League, but if you’re interested in the Master League don’t miss your chance to get a good Zacian to add to your list.
