The day before (opens in new tab), an open-world zombie survival game, isn’t the most original idea for a video game ever, but it definitely managed to capture the imagination of a lot of gamers: for a long time it topped the list of games with the most Wishlist steam. But in May, The Day Before was delayed (opens in new tab) by almost a year, and now Stray has topped it on the charts (opens in new tab)the game about a cat that finds its way in a city inhabited by robots.
This is what the top ten currently look like:
That doesn’t necessarily mean Stray is wishlisted more often than The Day Before or any other game on the list – many of which actually have thousands more follower (opens in new tab) as Stray. The list is sorted by relevance and by Simon Carless the GameDiscoveryCo newsletter (opens in new tab)this means there’s a touch of Steam’s old algorithmic magic at work too.
“The Steam ‘Top Wishlists’ chart is not 100% accurate of how many total Wishlists you’ve received,” Carless wrote. “This is mostly the case, but is also influenced by the speed of the wish list. This allows games that quickly add to wishlists to reach higher charts. And games with lots of wishlists but adding literally zero may not show up at all.”
Stray has been attracting a lot of attention lately, both thanks to its imminent release – it’s out on July 19th – and the fact that it looks amazing: weird, funny, cute, and deservedly different and unlike anything else out there . (Science also tells us that cats are objectively better than dogs (opens in new tab)— as video game protagonists, anyway.) Apparently, that sudden influx of interest was enough to propel Stray to the top, and with all due respect to The Day Before, I think that’s where it belongs. We said last month that “actually everyone wants to be a cat (opens in new tab)‘ and yes, I definitely do.
