Pop Quiz: What Do You Get When a Top Phone Provider Partners with a Smart Luggage Brand? A super smart suitcase designed to keep you connected. And in this particular case, one you can practically spot from 35,000 feet.
T-Mobile has partnered with New York-based luggage brand Samsara Luggage to design a suitcase filled with most of the things you need to stay productive while traveling.
The result is Un carrier On (opens in new tab), a smart carry-on packed to the brim with useful smart features. It’s available for pre-order now in the US for $325 (excluding tax) and, in true T-Mobile fashion, comes in one shade and one shade only: magenta.
As for its smart features, it has what you would expect from smart luggage, which is a detachable power bank and a USB-C port for charging. But it also ups the ante with a flat work surface to rest your laptop on, Samsara’s Tag Smart luggage tracking, an adjustable aluminum telescoping handle, and oh yeah… wireless charging – because USB-C charging is so last year.
Of course, you get the basics too, including a TSA-approved combination lock and 360 spinning spinner wheels. The brands even included a set of eight packing cubes to help you stay organized.
Un-carrier On orders are expected to ship later in November, just in time for your holiday travel.
Opinion: It kind of makes sense
You may be wondering why T-Mobile is making its own case now. While this could be part of the airline’s campaign to promote its latest un-carrier move, coverage beyond (opens in new tab)that offers T-Mobile customers free in-flight WiFi, plus 5GB of free high-speed data per month and free texting to over 215 destinations around the world (qualifying plans only) on the largest US airlines, it really isn’t like that strange it seems for a phone company to enter the travel accessories business.
Our phones and phone plans are as important a part of travel as other obvious travel accessories. Whether we’re traveling for business or going on vacation, we rely on ours phones to find the best restaurants to try local cuisine, call an Uber, check in for an upcoming flight, and even navigate an unfamiliar location.
So if you think about it, it kind of makes sense for a phone provider to have their own line of travel accessories too. We’re not saying T-Mobile plans to do that. At the moment I was told that it has no plans to sell its own travel gadgets beyond this smart luggage.
But never say never. I’m already blown away, although not sure if the magenta color is something for me as Samsara has become a well known luggage brand and admittedly I’ve been eyeing their suitcases for a while. And if it succeeds, a suitable weekender or a checked-in suitcase is certainly not unlikely.
To be fair, the Un-Carrier On isn’t going to be the best luggage for everyone, not at this price point. But considering all the features it comes with – its wireless charging capability is a nice upgrade and its luggage tracking feature means that losing your luggage isn’t as big a headache as it used to be – it sounds like it will one of the cheapest suitcases on the shelves.
