Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) feature has a rocky history to put it bluntly. It has been involved in multiple crashes, seemingly persistent software bugs, and a slew of controls by a number of regulatory agencies. It should also cost more money.
The bump represents an additional $ 2,000 stapled on top of the not insignificant price: a new grand total of $ 12,000, or most of the way to a Honda Civic. It’s also not the first time FSD has gotten more expensive. In 2020, Musk announced (again on Twitter) around $ 2,000 Price increase. This latest increase, Musk clarified, will only apply in the US; He added that “the price of the feature will go up as we near the release of the FSD production code”.

What is noteworthy is that purchasing the “fully self-driving” feature doesn’t actually result in a car that drives itself. This is largely why Senators Markey and Blumenthal have asked the FTC to investigate Tesla and Musk for “overrating their vehicle’s capabilities,” among other things. According to a survey, only around 11 percent from Tesla Owners are dropping the money it takes to make FSD possible, and it’s hard to see how increasing the financial burden on buyers could reverse that trend.
